A New Semester of “God’s Names: A Portrait of His Heart”

Share

Our picture of God is, at best, incomplete. Often it is somewhat warped. Occasionally it is completely inaccurate.

How wonderful that God has chosen to reveal His character to us! One of my favorite methods of revelation is the names of God. God’s names offer us a portrait of His infinite and loving heart.

Throughout Scripture, God made His name known through personal encounters. The Lord formally introduced Himself with the name Jehovah when Moses asked His name (Exodus 3:14). This name tells me God is a relational being. Jehovah is ready and willing to grant greater levels of intimacy when I pursue Him like Moses did.

By studying divine appointments between God and His people in the Bible, we can see how His names are announced and His heart is exposed. When we find Abraham’s son facing death in Genesis 22, the Lord sends a substitute. That’s why Abraham declares God to be Jehovah Jireh, the Lord Will Provide. Another time we discover a runaway servant girl, Hagar, who realizes that she can’t outrun God’s watchful eye. Because the Lord sees her situation and intervenes, she calls Him El Roi, the God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13).

The Apostle Paul called Him, who had so radically repurposed his life, the God Of All Comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3) There is so much mercy and love in this name! We will begin with the God of All Comfort on January 26th at our spring kickoff for Divine Design. I hope you will join me.
