Counting On God, Part 2 – 09/20/11

This week Kathy continued our Counting On God series focusing on John 14:21-31 NLT. We saw Jesus’ example of love expressed through obedience and learned how we too can love God with (1) LOVE as our motive – Jesus said, “but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father.” Jn. 14:31 NLT (2) OBEDIENCE as our choice – We choose to walk with God deciding that He gets to lead, knowing that He has given us a new heart with right desires, and taking steps of obedience by faith in the God who fulfills His promises. (3) and PEACE as His gift – God has given us His Holy Spirit as our Comforter, Counselor, bringer of Truth and giver of Direction. He ushers in peace rather than confusion that comes when we trust in our own wisdom.

Kathy was clear to point out that obedience DOES NOT EQUAL perfection and this is not a call to performance. We were encouraged by the truth that God sees our hearts and that He is more concerned with the rightness of our hearts than with our “getting it right”. As we fall more in love with our God and understand more fully that He loves us perfectly, then obedience will be an outpouring of that love in our lives, as opposed to an effort to gain love in return. Again we are reminded that the walk of faith is about RELATIONSHIP.
